DesertOften when we feel discouragement settling in on our spirit it comes because of disappointment from unmet expectations. Satan’s goal is to weaken, dishearten, discourage, and make us lose hope.

Such was the case for the Israelites because of unbelief at Kadesh Barnea. The Lord had led them to this point to enter and take the land He was giving them. But because of their unbelief and disobedience, He sentenced them to wander in the desert for 40 years until that generation died off before He would allow them into the Promised Land.

After those 40 years, as Joshua prepared to occupy the land that God had given them, he carefully took note of God’s instructions. God encouraged Joshua and his men to “Be strong and courageous!” (Joshua 1:6, 7, 9). God repeated this command three times anticipating their fear in meeting the giants, walled cities, and armies of the land.

Forty years earlier, it had been those factors that had discouraged and disheartened Israel from taking the land then. The factors that we face are different, but often no less intimidating. These feelings can demoralize us and keep us from conquering our fears to tackle tough challenges.

Therefore we must remember that our Omnipotent Father reigns and is in control. Even when life seems totally out of control, God has a game plan that will empower and grow us to trust in Him. We need not be discouraged or disheartened like the ten original spies who would not trust God for the results and obey Him. In fact, they were so discouraged that they wanted to choose a new leader to take them back to Egypt!

Instead God wants us to be strong and courageous; to rejoice in knowing that the God of our salvation is our strength and if we lean on Him, He will give us the power to overcome those discouraging times.

Words are easier written or read than applied in our daily living. But our constant battle as believers is to completely trust Him who is able to help us overcome the threats and challenges life brings. D.L. Moody the great evangelist said, “Real true faith is man’s weakness leaning on God’s strength.”

The book of Isaiah is filled with great promises from a man who regularly faced the twins of discouragement and disappointment. Isaiah states: “He gives power to the weak, and to those who have no might He increases strength.” (Isaiah 40:29)

We cherish any verse in Scripture that reminds us to keep focused and intentional about evangelism and discipleship. “But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, discharge all the duties of your ministry.” 2 Timothy 4:5
