What Makes You Feel Safe?

“I will lie down and sleep in peace, for you alone,
O Lord, make me dwell in safety.”
Psalm 4:8

Security is a big deal and a big money maker in today’s economy. Home security systems, vehicle air bags, security barriers, birth control pills, yearly physicals, savings accounts, and pension plans provide only temporary peace of mind. As Americans, we spend billions of dollars on hi-tech self-protection equipment to find that they are often rendered obsolete even before the warranty expires. The only fully dependable and lasting peace comes from our security in Christ—knowing that we never have to face life alone. God is in control and always there for us.

The Psalmist, King David, understood this. As a shepherd, he carried a sling. As a soldier, he carried a sword. As a general, he had an army. As a king, he had guards. Ultimately, though, he knew in his heart that only God’s presence would protect Him…and that is where he found peace.

Pastor and Bible teacher Chuck Swindoll said this about security:
“Before the Holy Spirit came at Pentecost (Acts 2), the Spirit of God never permanently rested on any believer except David and John the Baptizer. Those are the only two. It was not uncommon for the Spirit of God to come for a temporary period of strengthening or insight or whatever was the need of the moment and then to depart, only to return again for another surge of the need of the moment, then to depart once again.

However, at Pentecost and from that time on, all the way through our present era, when the Spirit of God comes into the believing sinner at salvation, He never leaves. He comes and baptizes us into the body of Christ.”

Gadgets break, stock markets crash, and people let us down. Although it is prudent to take safety precautions and plan wisely for your future, we ultimately have to put our trust in God. Depending on man or the things of this world for our security makes about as much sense as anchoring ourselves to the rear bumper of a city bus. Sure, it feels strong and stable right now, but wait till it takes off!

Becoming a believer puts us in the lap of the One who will protect us, watch over us, help us through our problems, and make us better people because of them. We can rest in the peace and presence of a caring, loving God who will never leave or forsake us. You are in God’s watch-care and so am I. Praise God!

The Power of Truth:

  • “And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Phil. 4:7
  • “Depend on GOD and keep at it because in the LORD GOD you have a sure thing.” Isa. 26:4 (MSG)
  • “It is better to trust the LORD than to put confidence in people.” Psalm 118:8 (NLT)

Suggestion for Prayer:

Place your trust in Jesus. Ask God for the peace He has promised.
