Like most of you, I’ve had a cell phone for years. I remember the first cell phone I purchased. It was about the size of a large phone book. The evolution of cell phone technology has created many wonderful communication tools that have become a vital part of our daily life.
Recently, a friend of mine gave me his slightly used PDA/cell phone combo device. Instead of carrying two electronic tools, I can now carry a single unit to handle my appointment schedule and phone calls.
While thinking about communications, I was reminded how often the Bible speaks about having good communications. Through an active prayer life, we communicate to God Almighty. He listens for our voice and seeks to respond to our inquiries. Through His risen Son, God gave us direct revelation of His character and nature. The Old Testament patriarchs, prophets, judges, kings and priests were used as messengers to communicate God intentions to His people. The Holy Bible, God’s written word, communicates His heart and plan for mankind.
The Apostle Paul reminds us that, for the believer, there is direct communication to God through the power of the Holy Spirit. “For we know, brothers loved by God, that He has chosen you, because our gospel came to you not simply with words, but also with power, with the Holy Spirit, and with deep conviction.” 1 Thessalonians 1:4-5
The following illustration came to me from a friend. Wouldn’t it be wonderful if we utilized God’s word in the same way we handle our cell phones? Something to think about!
CELL PHONES vs. THE HOLY BIBLE
I wonder what would happen if we treated our Bible like we treat our cell phone? What if we carried it around in our purses or pockets? What if we flipped through it several times a day? What if we turned back home to go get it if we forgot it? What if we used it to receive daily messages? What if we treated it like we couldn’t live without it? What if we gave it to children as a gift? What if we used it when we traveled? What if we used it in case of emergency?
This is something to make you go….hmm…where is my Bible? No Batteries and no recharging…the Bible comes in many sizes… colors…large print…and with a personalized carrying case if you need it.
Oh, and one more thing…unlike our cell phones, we don’t have to worry about our Bible being disconnected because Jesus already paid the bill! Makes you stop and think “where are my priorities?”
And no dropped calls! No out-of-area service. We are covered by HIS service anywhere …anytime… with NO additional fees.
Let’s keep this in mind and try to use our Bibles as often as we use our cell phones.
